This elongated island lies just off the Dalmatian Coast. Petite Hvar Town has long been the centre of attention – ancient walls and palaces overlook the busy bay. As a bonus, its car-free streets make it an easy place to explore. The serpentine coastline beyond is backed by countryside knitted together with lavender fields, olive groves and vineyards.
• Lots of Hvar Town’s monuments congregate in the spacious main square, including St Stephen’s Cathedral and a petite palace.
• It’s well worth dropping by the Franciscan monastery. A stone bell tower and arching cloisters watch over the peaceful bay.

Note: If the ship can’t be tied up at a dock, it will be anchored a little way out, and tender boats are used to get you to and from the ship. You can use the tender services as much as you like. Guests with mobility issues will need to have some independent mobility to step in and out of the tender boat.

Ravenna has many a claim to fame – it was the capital of the Western Roman Empire, it’s seen the likes of Dante drop by, and it was a firm favourite with the art-loving Byzantines. It still has a dignified feel, thanks to its peaceful pedestrian streets and polished buildings. Head for the coast, and you’ll come across lively sandy beaches.
• The Byzantines really made their mark on Ravenna. You’ll spy a mausoleum laden with mosaics and several huge basilicas.
• After his exile from Florence, Dante spent his last years in Ravenna penning the Divine Comedy. His tomb is in the town centre – expect elegant carvings and a reverent atmosphere.
• Daytrip to Bologna, one of the prettiest cities in Italy. Highlights include the lovely-looking Piazza Maggiore, and the 17th-century anatomical theatre in the Palace of Archigginasio.

With 117 islands, 150 canals and more than 400 bridges, it’s time to swap your cruise ship for a gondola and embark on an affair to remember in one of the world’s most romantic cities.
- Take a ride on a gondola as you weave your way through the maze of canals in this fabulous floating city.
- Make the most of everything St Mark’s Square has to offer. Tick off St Mark’s Basilica, the Doge’s Palace, the Bridge of Sighs and the Campanile before giving your credit card a workout in the designer shops.
- Go behind the scenes at one of the glass factories on the island of Murano, then head to neighbouring Burano, which is famous for its lace making.
- Wander over the Rialto to see the Grand Canal. The banks of this huge waterway are lined with more than 180 buildings, which date back to the 13th and 18th century.

Set along a wide horseshoe-shaped bay, Koper’s a Medieval town where old and new go hand-in-hand. Lose yourself in the maze of streets, passing historical sights and browsing chic shops along the way.
- Be inspired by nature with a trip to the Postojna Caves.
- Pay a visit to the picturesque town of Piran or ‘little Italy’ as it’s also known. This place has held tight to its medieval roots – cue winding lanes, sleepy squares and pretty churches.
- Make your way to the capital, Ljubljana, and take a look at the National Museum of Slovenia. It’s home to a collection of ancient Palaeolithic artefacts, as well as the only Egyptian mummy in the country.

Although a busy working port, Rijeka has plenty of old world charm squirrelled away. Peach and lemon-coloured buildings march along the pedestrian streets, topped by terracotta roofs and carved arches. Rijeka also serves as a gateway to the islands filling the Kvarner Gulf. They’re a rural, laid-back bunch punctured with coves and beaches.
• Wander through the traffic-free Korzo district and you’ll discover Baroque clock towers, a main square with fountains, and locals sipping coffee on café terraces.
• There’s a daily canalside market. It’s less than a 10-minute walk from the harbour, and you’ll get a real taste of everyday life among the flower and food stalls.
• Krk is the closest island – it’s just a half-hour drive away via an arching bridge. Miles of beaches and a pretty capital city are among the highlights here.

Throughout history, empires have fought fiercely to call Sibenik their own. Over the years, it’s been the apple of the Byzantines, the Venetians, and the Hungarian Kingdom’s eye. It’s easy to see why the ancient powers wanted it so badly. This pretty seaside town has a UNESCO-protected church in its centre, 150 desert islands off its coast, and a national park full of waterfalls on its doorstep.
• The Cathedral of Saint James is an impressive Gothic and Renaissance-style church. Tip-toe around its interiors, and you’ll tick off a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
• The Krka National Park is laced with walking routes – carve a trail past its tumbling waterfalls.
